Existen muchas frases con este verbo irregular, pero nos vamos a dedicar a ver sólo 6 frases verbales en esta lección: 3 con “come up” y 3 con “come down.”

¿QUE SIGNIFICA COME?

Por si solo, “come” tiene dos significados principales: “venir” (implicando un movimiento hacia un lugar) y “llegar.” Por ejemplo:

• Come here.
  Ven acá.
• The packages came.
  Las encomiendas llegaron.

Cuando se trata de frases verbales, “come” tiene una variedad de significados.

1. COME DOWN = bajar, descender, venirse abajo

• Tell your brother to come down for dinner.
  Dile a tu hermano que baje a cenar.

2. COME DOWN ON = criticar o castigar fuertemente (agarrársela con), caer encima/sobre

3. COME DOWN WITH = caer enfermo/a, enfermarse de, contagiarse con

• I wasn’t expecting to come down with the flu this year.
  No esperaba contagiarme con la gripe este año.
• Everyone in her family came down with the chicken pox.
  Todos en su familiar se contagiaron con varicela.

1. COME UP = subir, ascender, surgir, salir (que salga un tema o el sol o luna)

• We were overwhelmed with all the problems that came up.
  Nos sentimos abrumados con todos los problemas que surgieron.
• She loves to watch the sun come up.
  A ella le encanta ver el sol salir.

Esta frase verbal también significa “acercarse a alguien”. Por ejemplo:
They came up and introduced themselves. (Se acercaron y se presentaron.)

2. COME UP AGAINST = competir con [alguien], toparse con [algún obstáculo]

• We came up against a lot of obstacles this year.
  Nos topamos con muchos obstáculos este año.
• It’s possible that Sally with come up against her sister in this year’s competition.
