Expresiones Comunes con el Verbo Irregular LET en inglés

La semana pasada compartimos una imagen en Twitter sobre la palabra LET y algunas expresiones comunes. Prometimos escribir un post con más expresiones y ejemplos esta semana y aquí está!

LET es un verbo irregular y  significa “dejar o permitir.” (Se conjuga let, let, let)

Let me do that.Déjame hacer eso. / Déjame hacerlo.
I don’t know if you should let her go.No sé si debes permitirle ir.
Will she let you go to the party?¿Te dejará ir a la fiesta?

LET EN EXPRESIONES COMUNES

LET también forma parte de muchas frases verbales y modismos  donde su significado a veces cambia de manera importante.

FRASES VERBALES COMUNES CON LET

  • let by/through = dejar alguien pasar
    Let them through! (Déjenlos pasar)
  • let down = desilusionar
    You really let me down, Mark. (En verdad que me desilusionaste, Mark.)
  • let in = dejar entrar, hacer pasar
    Close the door. You’re letting in all the cold. (Cierra la puerta. Estas dejando entrar el frío.)
  • let in on = hacer alguien participe de un secreto, broma o información
    I’ll let you in on the secret if you promise not to tell.  (Te contaré el secret si prometes no contarle a nadie.)
  • let off = liberar sin represalias, encontrar no culpable, absolver
    No one expected they would be let off so easily.  (Nadie esperaba que los absolvieran tan fácilmente.)
  • let on = dar a conocer que uno sabe lo que está pasando, soltar prenda, soltar la pepa
    He tried not to let on that he knew her secret. (Intento no dar a conocer que sabía su secreto.)
  • let out = dejar salir
    Could you let out the dog?  (¿Podrías dejar salir el perro?)
  • let up = aflojar, amainar
    The storm didn’t let up until morning.  (La tormenta no amainó hasta la mañana.)

MODISMOS Y EXPRESIONES CON LET

*sb = somebody (alguien) ; smth = something (algo)

  • let off steam = desahogarse, liberar estrés
  • let sb off the hook = salir de rositas, dejar libre sin represalias
  • let go (of)= soltar, dejar ir, liberar
  • let one’s guard down = bajar la guardia
  • let smth slip = dejar algo (secreto/información) escapar
  • let sb down easy/gently = rechazar de la manera más gentil y amable posible
  • let the cat out of the bag = irse de tollo, alcahuetear, soltar la lengua
